For our most recent contest, Keep a Lid On, readers were invited to name a time when it was wise to take a breath and not vent. Congratulations to Beth, who left us with a vivid image:
My 22 yo niece went to an expensive private university. Despite my best advice, pleas for thoughts of her future and not-insignificant financial support, she studied sociology, “Because I like it.” She graduated in May and started her career, you guessed it, working part-time at TGIFs. I’ve been biting my tongue so hard blood spurts out of my mouth.

Well done Beth! My best friend and I are always laughing about how we don’t get nearly the amount of credit we deserve for self-editing.
Cheers!
Self-editing, that’s a great phrase.
Haha, that’s perfect! One of those situations where its REALLY hard to keep a lid on it, but you’re really glad you did (she IS only 22 after all).
Great story Beth!
A therapist friend of mine often tells me that people don’t really take advice, anyway.
Especially un-asked for advice!
My congrats to Beth for her self-control. Not sure I could have restrained myself in the same situation.
To be honest, that therapist friend is one of the few people whose advice I take. But he’s like Yoda. You’d be a fool to pass it up.
Congrats, Beth. (Hard to be an aunt sometimes, isn’t it???)
If only moms and dads could be that wise.
