Home repair is not my thing, so I own a basic toolkit, and I’m fine with it. Where I really expend time and energy is in the kitchen. There is high-end cookware that I dream about (like Le Creuset). But more and more, I reach for lightweight nonstick pans and even aluminum roasters that I buy in bulk at Costco (forgive me, environment) because they’re easy to maneuver and clean up. Do you have a surprising favorite tool?

My Rosle garlic press that was a gift. They are fantastic but ridiculously expensive. My ridiculously expensive Scanpan nonstick pan that I bought on sale. My Clarisonic face scrubber, again too expensive. And finally a tape measure and hammer that I’ve had almost since I moved out of my parents house into my first apartment at 19, many, many decades ago now. Couldn’t pick just one.
I haven’t used a garlic press for ages, because they seem hard to really clean. I also adore my scanpan.
Wendy, this one is a dream to clean! Such a help as there are cooking situations that call for pressed garlic.
For those recipes, I have to mince the garlic like crazy. It takes forever.
I’ve been giving this some thought and have narrowed it down to TWO tools–my coil whisk (great for sauces, custards, and the like), which is probably my runner-up, and my favorite wooden spoon, which I think will be the winner. I love the feel of a wooden spoon and the one I have is now a bit weathered from use, which I love.
Because I use so much nonstick cookware, I have a lot of silicone tools. I rarely reach for the wooden spoon. But you’re inspiring me.
