After I write each post for this blog, I select a category in which to file it. I created these categories years ago, and they include: daily life, myths and stereotypes, foodstuff, excursions and a final catchall, “what gets me through the day.” During this scorched-earth political campaign, I feel more in need of comfort than ever. When I awoke to the news of Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel Prize for literature, it gave me a boost.

Wendy, I feel the same! What a great choice and a real boost in a time of such negativity.
Some people have questioned whether this award was appropriate – but he is really as much a poet as a musician (more so, I would say). And it really opens up the award to a broader interpretation of what is literature. At times I find myself reciting his lyrics in my mind like the poems they are – they affect me as a kind of incantation.
I feel the same about Leonard Cohen. Can he be next …!
I agree that Leonard Cohen would be an awesome candidate. I’ve read the comments from people who disagree with the choice, and I get their point. But it was so out of the box. It made me smile.
Just as language is changing, the inclusion of the singular they, so is the definition of literature or poetry. Another example is rap music. The first time heard it , I hated it. Now, I have my favorite artists and believe, at its best, it’s poetry. I like that these definitions are living and vibrant. I love the choice of Dylan and would applaud a Lenard Cohen win as well.
Jules, have you read this New Yorker profile on Leonard Cohen? It’s absolutely beautiful. http://bit.ly/2dWuJdx
Thanks so much for this. I’m on a plane day after tomorrow and this will be perfect.
You’re going to love this. It’s perfect airplane reading. Safe travels.
Wendy, I loved it. True soul food. I had a hard copy of The New Yorker and shared it with my seat mates. The flight was packed and long. The article helped us all hang in with good nature. Thanks!
It’s an epic piece, and will be remembered for a long time. Hope you had a good trip.
PS This is such a beautiful photo of the young Dylan. I saw him in Harvard Square in high school and this reminds me of him then.
Now that’s a celebrity sighting!!
