Color Choice

I’m on the Board of my condo association and we’re in the beginning stages of picking a new paint color for the hallway. For this job, I’m luckily paired with another Board member who’s a recently retired interior designer with decades of experience. I’ve never been good at visualizing what wall color will enhance a room. In the past, I’ve had some real missteps. Are you good at choosing paint?

I’m two for two on the accent walls in my house 🙂 But I spend a LOT of time with paint chips, so I’m not exactly the most efficient person at this.

I did a great job picking the paint colors for my kitchen–pale grey with a bright, butter yellow for the accent wall.

I think I’ve done a decent job in the past. I don’t for anything too trendy or wild or dark. And I look at a lot of magazine photos. And paint a swatch on. Sort of on topic, I toured an old plantation house at a state park the other weekend. They had done research to see what the colors were when it was built and repainted the house. The colors were hideous!!!

I once hear from a painter that you should choose one shade lighter than you think for interior, and one shade darker for exterior. The color of the indoor walls reflecting off each other darkens the effect, and the sun outdoors lightens it.

What confuses me is the impact on the color of other surfaces in the room (e.g. floor, existing cabinets)
