Spring 2017

In Los Angeles, the entrance of spring is not as dramatic as it is in other places. But today, there was a sure sign as I walked past a tree in the neighborhood bursting with the scent of orange blossoms. This week, I’ve been enjoying the longer daylight and the flowering trees. My parents both died in the spring, so for me, it’s a season that marks the end as well as the renewal of life. What are you most looking forward to as we head into this time of year?

Even though in LA you don’t go, dramatically, from snow to flowering trees, I bet you can notice the difference in the light. For me, that’s one of the major changes I look forward to about every season -including the particular light of spring–clean and sharp. Each season has its own beautiful kind of light I think.

I appreciate your perspective, Robin. I find spring light has a hopefulness to it, with more daylight on the way.

I look forward to the birds singing and welcoming the day. They are so cheerful even if they seem to start so early! I’ve been in the south the last few months and the birds have been chirping since sometime in February. Of course, the temps were in the mid 70s a lot of the time.

The Spring Peepers and their lovely songs and the Great Eastern Phoebe families who have been nesting here since we built our home in 1997. They are my very natural form of insect control.
    I love love love Spring!

The cherry blossoms and the magnolias – there is a huge magnolia tree just outside my living room window, and I always look forward to it blooming every year. And long walks in the evenings with my dog as the weather gets warmer and the light lasts longer. Everything feels more full of life.

      Has the magnolia started blooming?

It tried – it was out for a couple days during an early warm spell, then it got cold again and all the flowers died. We were gypped – so disappointing! Maybe we’ll be luckier next year…
