Dish Rack Protocol When You’re Single

I don’t like visual chaos, which is why my home is fairly neat. One exception is a perennially messy desk. And the other is the dish rack. The items I use everyday – coffee mug, juice glass, water bottle, paring knife, small plate, granola spoon and bowl – never get stored back into their respective spots. I don’t much see the point. And I’m wondering if this is because I live alone and there’s no one bugging me about it. Please, tell me, can you relate?

Wendy, I am almost exactly like you – very neat every where else – except that instead of a messy desk I have a messy dining room table covered with yarn and various knitting projects underway. And my dish rack is always full. I hardy ever use the dishwasher, partly because I have my favorite cup/bowl/plate (all made by my sister) that I use everyday. Plus two dog bowls that get washed twice a day. I sometimes try putting things away but it seems they are out again within the hour.
Also, I love this painting! the color palette but also the appreciation of the simple everyday things it conveys.

I’m with you and the dishwasher. Except for dinner parties, I use it a couple of times a month.

Relatively neat, save for my desks (home and office). The kitchen may get a bit messy if I’ve done some cooking, but by the time I go to bed, it’s clean again. In fact, putting dishes (either from the dish rack or the dishwasher) is one of my favorite household chores! I love putting everything in its place! That said, I don’t wash dishes immediately, so sometimes they do sit out for a while. Like you, I dislike visual messiness.

Don’t think it’s a single vs. married thing though.I haven’t noticed a difference between friends who are married vs. single (with respect to clean desks and clean dish racks).

Your post made me smile. I am exactly the same with the dish rack and I have to confess the washing basket. Favourite items of clothing that get worn a lot never seem to make it into the wardrobe/drawers!! 🙂

Thanks for the confession about your favorite items of clothing. I also have a few favorite things (mostly sweats) that I keep out on the top of my drawer.
