Tribute to Dad

This is the 13th anniversary of my father’s passing. In accordance with Jewish tradition, I’ll be lighting a candle at sunset to commemorate the day. My father was my hero. He wasn’t famous or flashy. But Dad was the kindest and most gracious man I’ve ever known. He was always so happy to see me. My parents were married for 45 years until my mother’s death and they adored each other. They modeled what a successful marriage could look like. Every day, I aspire to be more like Dad. Our common bond (apart from DNA) is an enduring passion for bread and chocolate.

My Dad passed in 2004 and I still miss him.
Over the weekend I found an old metal box in a cardboard box that I had saved from my parents house. Inside the box were my parents keepsakes. I had never looked in the box before this past weekend. And inside a Father’s Day card to my Dad from me when I was a child.
You know I cried when I saw it. He and my and my mom are my guardian angels and I swear they still give me guidance when I need it.
I think your tradition sounds wonderful and your Dad would be very proud of you.

The story of the box made me weepy. I love that you found it and that it held such a precious gift.

You were very lucky to have had such a loving family. I lived in a violent and abusive household, so what I hoped was that I could create the perfect loving family when I grew up.

It was not a perfect family – my mother and I often clashed, and she went to her grave furious that I never got married (and didn’t give her grandchildren). But ultimately I felt loved and I’m grateful for that. As an adult, I’ve had to create my loving family through friends.
