The Last Supper

With 7 close friends, I’m participating in an event called Death Over Dinner. The concept is to gather around the table in a semi-structured way to talk about the taboo subjects of death and dying. And since I’m the person organizing our small group, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the menu. As a thought exercise, I’ve asked the participants to suggest items they’d like to have for their last meal. Some of the suggestions so far have been lobster, garlic fries, mac and cheese, ice-cream sandwiches. And one of my perennial favorites, pizza. What would be on your last supper list?

This is very interesting. Maybe I’m weird, maybe it’s my background in criminal law but talking about death doesn’t bother me. Even though I’m single with no kids I have a will in which I specify how to dispose of my body in case my parents have to do that (hopefully not!!) to spare them having to make the decision. For my last meal I’d want delicious heirloom tomatoes (maybe on soft bread with mayo) and fresh, ripe peaches. Heaven.

Yikes is it taboo? My family has always been pretty open about it. We also have religious traditions that we adhere to so it’s one size fits all mentality.
But for my last meal…Prime Rib medium rare, a big baked potato dripping with butter and sour cream and bacon bits, ceasar salad, please!!!

      And for dessert?

And for dessert…. an assortment of petit fours. And if you come up short on conversation you can mention that at my Godmothers’s funeral we had them and lots of other wonderful pastries which was one of her last requests.

I get very jinx-y talking about death. Therefore, I’d certainly need a lot of Chardonnay for either supper. To soak up all that wine, I’d want my grandmother’s homemade spaghetti, my grandmother’s meatballs, tossed salad with a perfect red wine vinaigrette, and garlic bread dripping with butter. And more chardonnay.
