Honoring Our Uniqueness

One of my favorite moments at the Emmys this year was the rousing speech from Lena Waithe who won the best writer award for Master of None. She prefaced the remarks below with a shoutout to her LGBTQIA family, and even though I’m straight, they had a real resonance for me going through life as a single woman.

“The things that make us different, those are our superpowers — every day when you walk out the door and put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it.”

Wendy, I have long said that making wonderful friends is my superpower! I really do have a knack for finding interesting people–my tribe! But I sometimes wonder if it’s because of my single status. I don’t have a husband as a “crutch”. If I want interaction or companionship, *I* have to make it happen. And I do.

I guess my other superpowers are the ability to relish solo time (indeed, I NEED it) and the ability to sniff out good cheese.

Wendy, it was difficult and ultimately unsuccessful. Because of the distance (we lived a couple of hours away) it really wasn’t possible to have as much contact with friends as I wanted (and needed!)Certainly kept up with FB and text and messaging, but that’s not enough. I need some F2F time! I’m seeing them much more regularly and LOVE it.

And as much as I enjoyed spending time with him, I didn’t have enough alone time either. Some weekends I couldn’t wait for him (or me) to leave, so I could have some time to myself. Evenings during the week were spent working, so it didn’t “count” as alone time (that was so I’d have the weekends free). But I really missed my girlfriends and since the end of the relationship, my relationships with THEM has deepened by an order or two of magnitude.
