I’m no longer sure why or when I started buying Panettone for the holidays. But the Italian sweet bread has become such a fixture in my December kitchen that I can’t imagine getting through the fraught month without it. Similar to tomatoes, the Panettone season is limited, so I try to stock up and take advantage when it’s around. Just seeing the colorful box cheers me up. What’s your traditional holiday indulgence?

Well, Wendy, at some point in the holiday season I will have to make and drink a sidecar (cognac, Cointreau, lemon juice, with a lemon twist for garnish). To me, it just tastes like Christmas (never mind that I didn’t have one until my 30s and didn’t have it as a holiday tradition–but I have now made it into a tradition). Now that I have a set of coupe glasses, it’ll taste all the better!
I really like traditions we generate in adulthood. What are coupe glasses?
Wide, shallow glasses that are making a comeback. Used to serve champagne, but I use them for cocktails too.

I love these. They’d make for a beautiful cocktail.
I have a set sort of like this: my great aunt Florence’s sherbet glasses. I use them for margaritas. I’m sure my great aunt Florence had never heard of a margarita, but I’m equally sure that she would approve. I’m glad to hear that style is making a comeback! I am more on point than I thought. 😉
The right glassware really makes a difference. Here’s to great aunt Florence.
This: https://www.davidlebovitz.com/chocolatealmond/ My word. Last year I decided to get over my fear of boiling things at absurdly high temperatures, and this was the way to do it.
I’ve been thinking about trying David Lebovitz’ babka recipe. It looks very time consuming. So I’m looking for reassurances that it’s reliable and worth it.
I have generally found his recipes very, very good. Can’t vouch for the babka, but I think you should try it! Let us know how it turns out.
Ok. Thanks for the encouragement and I’ll keep you posted.
