2017 Review

As this tumultuous year winds down, in which I was enraged much of the time, I’ve been challenging myself to reflect on the parts that actually went well. And with that in mind, I’m going to ask you a couple of questions, inspired by my coaching mentor, Stephanie Marisca.

1. Name one thing you accomplished this year that you’re especially proud of.
2. What quality (or qualities) do you possess that enabled you to accomplish it.

And if you feel like sharing your accomplishment with the FPS community, we’d love to hear it!

I finished 2nd year of a medical degree, so I’m 41 and 50% a doctor. Looking back I don’t know how I did it because there were plenty of times I felt like I was crawling through it on my knees. I used to say to myself, “Tomorrow I can quit” then go into school. And with a couple of hundred tomorrows that never came the year was up and my exams were done. Roll on 2018!

My first half-century ride. I had to give up running back in 2016, due to recurrent injuries, so with the help of an ex-boyfriend, I took up cycling. Continued with it even after we split up and set a goal of completing a 50-mile ride by August 31. On August 31, I rode for 50.6 miles! A big deal for me, especially since I did it on a mountain bike, not the lighter road bike (which I plan to buy in 2018). Two weeks later, I did my second half-century. I felt accomplished and athletic and proud. Next up is a metric century (100 km/62 miles).

I realized that I am good at setting athletic goals and slogging toward them.

Wow! I can’t imagine. Petra, my hunch is your good at setting goals in a myriad of spheres and you always make it to the finish line.

Qualities-Good planning, and brave enough to take the plunge. Disciplined enough to be cautious financially.
Not sure why I was so afraid of it. I am absolutely loving it!
    Happy New Year!!!

Last year, my New Years resolution was to read a book per week. 52 books. I ended up reading 38 books. The old cliche – shoot for the stars and hit a lamp post is true. I’m happy with my lamp post!

Wendy, I’m late to the party, but I wanted to thank you so much for posting these questions. I’ve found them very thought-provoking.

I have a happy accomplishment and a sad one. Happy one first: I have an article coming out in a major publication in my field early in the new year. It’s the culmination of several years of diligent and painstaking work, and I am thrilled that it’s going to see the light of day.

Sad one: I had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty right before Thanksgiving. But I was able to keep a clear focus on my values (most importantly: not prolonging his suffering in an attempt to minimize mine), and I think that’s how I was able to do that well.

So I’m hoping that persistence and courage will continue to bear fruit in 2018!

Kudos for your major accomplishment. If you feel like sharing the details, what’s the article and publication?

And I’m so, so sorry about your kitty. I went through that earlier this year. It’s a real heartbreak, but also gratitude for all the love.
