Out and About

Yesterday, I was speaking on the phone to a married friend with whom I hadn’t connected in a long time. After catching up on the essentials, he asked, “how’s your social life?” The question caught me off guard. Is he asking me if I’m dating anyone and short of that, does it mean my social life’s a bust. After a long pause, I said: “… uh, it’s great!”

Honestly, Wendy, until I read this post, it never occurred to me that “how’s your social life” could be construed as “are you dating someone”. I think if I were asked that question, I would respond with “it’s great!” and then share some example of a party I went to or a dinner with friends, that sort of thing. I guess the reaction of the questioner would tell me if dating or an actual social life was the object of the query.

If the former, I might ask “why didn’t you ask that, then”. But I have the luxury of not being directly asked that question and having to answer in the moment!

That’s so interesting, Petra. It could be that I defensively misinterpreted the question. The friend who asked is a truly wonderful person. I’ll have to find out.
