A ripe heirloom tomato is my favorite food. I bought some last night at my local “natural” market and they were only ok. Guess it’s too early still. I used to grow my own when I had a sunny yard. Would slice and eat on toasted soft bread with Duke’s mayonnaise and S&P. My version of heaven.
What is it about the smell of tomatoes on the vine? Run your handover the leaves and green fruit/veg…that smell = summertime. (I am so anxious for them to turn red and ready)
Good local tomatoes are just starting to arrive. My organic farmer friend says that this year has been her most challenging weather-wise and everything is late this year. That said, excellent green beans abound and I taught a couple of friends of mine how to can garlic dill pickles green beans. The beets have been small but I canned a few pints of sweet and sour ones.
My own cherry tomatoes have started to produce. And I completely get the tomato scent equals summertime concept!

When I realized that tomatoes are seasonal, it made me appreciate the smell so much more. It only happens a few months out of the year.
My amazing Farmer’s Market is protected from the sun. So yeah, that’s a good daydream!
In my experience, it’s really hard to find a good tomato. That’s when I do, I celebrate!
