Resilience and Resistence

The etymology of the word, resilience, is the act of rebounding. And I think about that in my own life with its typical ups and downs. But also in a broader sense as I struggle with despair given the state of the nation. When I’m in need of a framework for resilience, I take inspiration from the suffragettes, who kept up the fight for generations. Surely, I can keep fighting through the next couple of years.

Wendy McNaughton illustrated Samin Nosrat’s Salt Fat Acid Heat! I bought that last year (when I started my cookbook almost-moratorium: one cookbook for my birthday per year).

Anyway, this is really worth taking to heart. As someone (Gandhi? Mother Teresa? Who knows!) said, we can’t do everything, but we can do something. And feeling down about the state of things is normal, but it behooves us to right ourselves again. We have work to do!

I’ve been a fan of Wendy MacNaughton’s for years. In fact, when I was thinking about doing a book about being single, I got in touch with her about possibly doing the illustrations.
