At a restaurant this week, I had breakfast with a couple who recently got engaged. While we were perusing the menu, they started negotiating about what selections they could share. She wanted one thing, he wanted another. But they were trying to come up with items that would please both of them. It was one of those moments that I was happy to be single. I got to choose my meal without interference or compromise.

Coupled people can’t have their own meals?! I got a laugh from this. Last year I wrote down my top 5 things I love about being single so I wouldn’t compromise for someone not worth it. It all boiled down to “do what I want, when I want!”
There are situations when I think compromise can be a good thing, but not when it comes to food. I want to have my own meal.
Whenever I am around couples I feel almost selfish being single.
This makes me smile!
Sadly I just ended a one-year relationship due to a fundamental issue that we couldn’t resolve despite our best efforts, but one of the things I was very proud of and that we did successfully was sharing and taking turns. It didn’t feel like compromise. It only created opportunities for more joy.
I’m so sorry for the loss of what sounds like a meaningful relationship, Leyla. And I’m glad you were able to appreciate its joy.
