Spring Awakening

With our year-round temperate weather in L.A., seasons are nuanced. But change is still noticeable if you look close enough. For one thing, there’s already so much light. And the Jacaranda tree, with its ravishing purple flowers, will be blooming soon. What tops your spring to-see list?

For me, the harbingers of spring are crocuses (emerging, but late this year) and rhubarb. I saw the very first rhubarb shoot poke out of the ground on Sunday! Ironically, it had snowed in the morning, but all was gone by the afternoon. But rhubarb, one of the first food plants I see, tells me that the weekly farmers market is around the bend and, along with that, bicycle riding and commuting. I’m now doing some of my errands by foot, now that the bitter cold seems to have passes. And yes, Wendy, there is the longer daylight period.

My late Aunt Clara planted some miniature daffodils in my yard.
They are the happiest flowers for me, because I think of her when I see them.
    Happy Spring!

They are ready to bloom any day I am so excited.
