It took a 21st century vantage point for me to appreciate the talent of Doris Day. I became a huge fan. Her sunny on-screen persona belied a stormy personal life. After 4 failed marriages, she turned to animals, which became her lifelong calling. “I have never found in a human being loyalty comparable to that of any pet.”
