Cool Down
I have an overhead fan in my bedroom, and on hot nights, I try to position me and my dog at the best angle to feel the breeze. But apparently, fans don’t work that well to cool off dogs, which is good to know. What are your best “beat the heat” strategies?

I’m in the south, where it’s always been hot even before climate change, so air conditioning is standard. Thank you for the link. I was watching my brother’s dog once and it loves to fetch. Suddenly it seemed to get very overheated and was panting extremely hard. I don’t know how I knew to do this, but I brought her inside in front of a fan and put soaking wet rags on her belly. It was very scary how quickly she went from happily fetching to panting so hard she seemed to have a hard time catching her breath. After reading the article I may start carrying a frozen rag with me when I walk my dog in case he gets too hot. By the time he may need it, it will be cool instead of frozen!
Such good instincts, Claire. My aging dog gets overheated pretty easily these days. A frozen rag is a great idea.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to freeze a wet bandanna and put it on them before going outside.
I used to be part of a writing workshop. It was led by a teacher at her house in Santa Monica, CA with no air conditioning. On really hot nights, she used to give us bandannas that she kept in the freezer. They worked great.
