Slow it down

On days when I have the most perspective, I tell myself it’s a privilege to age. Not everyone gets the chance.

And this is so true. A couple of years ago, both my elementary school crush and high school crush both passed away (in their 50s–too young an age to die). I think of the privilege of aging often. And indeed, some physical issues aside, aging (as opposed to getting old) can bring a time of flowering, especially for women. A good friend of mine is now in her late 70s and still writing (she is a former creative writing professor and a published author). Another friend, about 70, did hiking in the Alps over summer (with a new boyfriend to boot!) Still another spends her time between two states (I think she’s a little afraid of leaving her wonderful friendship circle here in Indiana). Sure, we may bemoan our wrinkles or our crepey skin, our aching joints or our graying hairs, but for many of us, this is also a time of discovery.

My friend’s mother had breast cancer in her 30’s and she rejoices with every birthday. Being gifted another year of life is truly a reason to celebrate – as if to say “I did it! I’m still here! Let’s celebrate my birthday!”
