Who’s Your Match?

Today, a woman in my ballet class who I think is about 40, was wearing a solitaire ring on a chain around her neck. When I asked her about it, she said, “I’m married to myself.” I loved that and thought, things have really changed.

I first heard about this from an article either by or about Sasha Cagen, of Quirkyalone fame. THought it was a great idea then and I still think it’s a wonderful idea. One SHOULD be first in one’s own life, not in the massive ego sense, but rather in the “put on your own oxygen mask before you attempt to help anyone with theirs” sense. If you aren’t taking care of or caring for or loving yourself, you aren’t going to be of much help or service to anyone else.

If contemporary Western marriage* is, allegedly, a declaration of love, then who better to be the recipient of said love than oneself. And you know, you’re already living with yourself, so why not make it official 🙂

*As opposed to times and cultures and traditions where marriage is an economic union or one that brings families together formally.

It really has become a thing! NYT (or maybe NY Mag? Can’t remember) did a story recently on a marriage to oneself wedding and reception.

I’ve done this and I love it. Slightly unplanned but a good idea all the same. I was at a jewellery auction with a friend. It was 13 years ago when I was 30 and single and very happy about all of that.

My friend was there to bid on a “10th wedding anniversary engagement ring upgrade ring”. Apparently this is a thing.

Anyways, there was a rather eye catching ring on display and I was drawn to it. I had never seen anything like it. It looked like wise, magical, very distinct in a unpushy way. A massive purple sapphire stone with diamonds hugging either side of it.

I was mesmerised. I knew it was MY ring. I had never known there was a ring out there for me, but this was My ring to me.

So I bid on it, somewhat doggedly, another woman wanted it but I didnt let it go, and my ring came home with me. I still love it. It speaks to me. People always comment very positively on it.

Ps Friend went home empty handed that day. No magic personal to her there that day.
