I got about 100 kids before I ran out of treats and turned out the porch light. Most are from other, less safe parts of the city. I’m fine with this, because kids shouldn’t be afraid to knock on someone’s door to ask for candy.

That said, I gave out little toys instead of candy (a la Teal Pumpkin Project, in which non-food treats are encouraged so kids with allergies can get something). Little pots of slime, fake fingers, bouncy eyeballs, Frankenstein stampers, and pumpkin whistles were quite popular (Halloween-themed pencils less so). Also had skull and spider erasers. Not a single kid complained about the lack of candy. This is a win-win situation for me, because not only can children with allergies participate, but I don’t have to feel guilty about feeding the sugar epidemic.

Highlight of the evening–a little kid excitedly running to his mom, yelling, “Mom, I got slime! I got slime!” Must buy double the slime next year.
