Women Win

I want to wake up in a world where a woman is U.S. president and another wins the Oscar for Best Director.

I find this quote unfortunate and divisive. Simply being a woman (or simply being a man) isn’t a unique or useful qualifier.

Note to mention, by definition, any “us vs. them” POV leaves someone out. Aren’t we divided enough in this country?

Mind you, I’m all for women! But whenever anyone — or any gender, any political party, or other group — attempts to stand taller by presenting themselves as somehow better or more special than The Other simply because they are Woman, or Democrat, or Republican, etc. … we all lose.

If I vote for Warren, it wouldn’t be because she’s a woman; indeed, that would undermine all the experience and smarts she brings to the table. It would be because I think she’s the best person for the job.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Sabine. I appreciate your point of view. I wouldn’t vote for a candidate just because she’s a woman, but I’m disgusted that women with the same or better qualifications get locked out of opportunities, whether it’s in the Boardroom, the film studio or high political office. And it has a trickle down effect in the sense that women in leadership positions will hire more women and recognize their achievements. As an example from my former industry, it’s shameful that Greta Gerwig didn’t get an Academy Award nomination for best director for Little Women. And the reason she didn’t is that an overwhelming number of the Academy members who vote on the nominations are men. So, I see it as an important shift that has to take place in order for real progress to be made.

I totally agree with you, Wendy. Every word you say. I just take exception to “playing the woman card” when what really carries the day is talent (Greta Gerwig) and hard work, experience, and insight (Elizabeth Warren). Thanks for a platform to get that off my chest… 😉

Where I disagree with you Sabine, is that in this moment, it’s really important to point out to the electorate that women win, because so many people don’t think it’s possible.

I enjoy answering the tired “can a woman beat Trump?” question with “one already did”
