I’ve already been seeing back to school ads on TV. Even though L.A. is like a perennial summer, my favorite season is zooming by way too fast.

This afternoon, I was chatting with one of my favorite dog-owner neighbors. He alerted me to an empty lot a few streets away that’s going to be converted to a hi-rise apartment building. In an already dense neighborhood, the thought of construction, more traffic and noise sent us into panic mode. And then I remembered this drawing I’d seen earlier, and thought – what if we just assumed it’s going to be okay.

When I was a kid, my my favorite meal was Chef Boyardi beef raviolis in a can. Now, I shudder to think of it. I’d much rather focus on this spectacular saffron-infused cheese ravioli made by Linda Miller Nicholson. She describes it as “if Super Mario and Minnie Mouse had a baby.”
This morning, I tweaked my back in ballet class and I’m a little hobbled. Right now, getting out of my chair (or more aptly off the couch), takes a lot more effort. Despite the discomfort, I’m trying to use it as a teachable moment for what I take for granted. This New Yorker cartoon from Leo Cullum cheered me up.
The Farmer’s Market is bursting with color, and I’ve begun my annual tomato binge. It’s the third night in a row eating gazpacho.

FPS readers know this routine. For 24 hours starting at sunset every Friday, I try and get myself into an aspirational mood. Using my faith tradition as a framework, I put hope in the forefront and negativity in the parking lot. It’s requires a lot of mental jujitsu, maybe never as much as now. But it kinda works. Here’s to what’s possible for all of us!

On a balmy summer night, I’m eating homemade baba ganoush and grilled red peppers on pita bread. And of course, a martini. How about you?
