Is There a Difference between a Spinster and a Confirmed Bachelor?

david-souterReading articles about David Souter’s retirement from the Supreme Court, I was fascinated to learn that he’s a “confirmed bachelor.”  I wonder how this biographical detail would play out in the media, if we were talking about a never-married woman. Would there be a difference?

  1. Onely says:

I guess we know a little about how it would play out from the whole “Janet Napolitano will be great for the job because she has no life because she’s single” incident. Spinsters are assumed to have no life–Confirmed Bachelors are assumed to have *too* much of a life. = )

    I think.

  2. I think I might be a confirmed bachelorette. Sigh. That just sounds SO Barbie.

I think that confirmed bachelor used to be code for homosexual. But I’m not sure.

    Anyways, interesting thought.

  3. No way to know if this was the intent of the statement, but . . . “confirmed bachelor” is media code for “closeted gay man.”
