Are School Uniforms a Good Idea?

My friend, a former dentist, loved going to work wearing his scrubs. Getting dressed in the morning was a breeze. No decisions about color or silhouette. No insecurities about making a fashion faux pas. His closet was a sea of blue. I can’t imagine. I’d get so bored. But the other day, this friend’s niece was at the house, all giddy about the uniform she’s required to wear when she starts high school in the fall. (Maybe it’s genetic.) Tell me, is there an upside to dressing like your peers?

I attended private schools in Los Angeles most of my life, and the uniforms took the pressure off kids ( and their parents). You did not have to worry about wearing the latest designer clothes or shoes every day to be accepted. There were many affluent people attending the school and the uniforms requirement took away the need to compete over petty issues on a daily basis. We were severely limited on the amount of jewelry we could wear, and no makeup was allowed. There will always be something for kids to obsess and compete over in school, but keeping the “status” trappings out of the mix as long as you can allows them to focus on other things – like school.
    Cheers!
