What’s Your Biggest Fear About Being Single?

I could give a hundred examples that have crossed my mind through the years, from the trivial to the profound. At the time, each one has felt utterly consequential. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve without a date, or standing alone at my mother’s grave, the first step is to name it. What are yours?

What Do We Really Crave?

I love sugar. Brownies, mint chip ice cream, chocolate pot de crème, key lime pie, Snickers. I heard Charles Duhigg, a business reporter for the NY Times, talking about his book, The Power of Habit. Part of the research was personal. He was trying to understand his craving for cookies. What Duhigg came to realize was what he really wanted, when he left his desk each afternoon for a sweet snack at the cafeteria, was company.

I’m here to say, what I really want is the cookie.

Is “Playing With My Cat” a Euphemism?

This is a serious question. I’ve been trying to come up with a snappy title for my book about single life (based on FPS, which is based on single life). And I remembered one of my posts, “Playing With My Cat When I Should Be Dating.” An insightful friend, who happens to be a noted fiction writer, tactfully suggested that the title sounds like I’m masturbating. Oops. Dear readers, what do you think? Honestly. (Other title ideas greatly appreciated.)
