The Pleasure of Nesting

A satisfying evening is sitting on the Tibetan rug in my living room, back up against the couch, eating a home-cooked meal in front of the flat screen TV. Sipping a chilled martini, with the dog lying beside me, it’s close to perfect. Tonight, I’m going out, though I’d prefer to be nesting. It surprises me how much fun it is to stay in. Which leads me back to our CONTEST.

I cannot explain how much I miss evenings like that with my dog. We spent hundreds of hours like that watching movies, munching chips, popcorn or other things…
The dog we had during my teenage years used to love Jane Austen movies. Whenever I came downstairs with a black DVD in my hands she knew it was time to get a place on the couch.

I much prefer to stay in with the dogs too (in my case the dogs are on the couch while I sit on the floor!) … I don’t find it surprising, but I find it frustrating. My neighbors all generally stay in too in the evenings, but oh yeah, they are families. It sometimes seems like if you are single you are expected to be ‘out there’ more, dating etc. But I like to be at home, and in fact going out is a real effort. It makes the idea of dating very unpalatable. I would like to meet someone, but going through the dating stage seems like way too much work. Trying to figure out how one can skip ahead to the we-all-stay-at-home-with-the-dogs scenario.

I wish I could jump over early dating into the comfortable part. But hard doesn’t mean impossible. Let’s think about it.

Ditto on movie nights with the dog – always an enjoyable evening and perfect companionship.
When I was married, my ex and I had plenty of nesting evenings, and while enjoyable in its own way, I am grateful to also experience nesting by myself. It was hard the first while, but there are times now I look forward to it.

I feel like I need to fly the cat flag here. A pile of magazines, my favorite pajamas, snack food and a couple of cats make for a fine evening in my book.

Thanks, Jane. for standing up for cats. They deserve it, and I love them, too.

  7. Carolin says:

I love them, too but my cat never liked nesting at all.

My cat did remind me of men I’ve dated. All cozy with me at night, and then acts like she doesn’t know me, in the morning.

That’s the treatment I get whenever I sleep in my mother’s guest bedroom.
