I get some of my best ideas walking the dog, which makes sense after listening to Jonah Lehrer talk about the creative process in his new book, Imagine: How Creativity Works. Concentrating hard on a problem doesn’t always yield the best results. Sometimes you need to break away. How do you get your juices flowing?
Bottle from Vinegar and Brown
I find the best way to spur my creativity is by getting out in the world and experiencing things. I’m about halfway through writing a novel and while I’m not totally stymied it didn’t hurt that I was “dragged” out salsa dancing by a friend last Friday night and, what do you know, by the end of the weekend a whole scene was written with salsa dancing at the center of it.
Dancing is my most enduring passion. I couldn’t live without it!
I don’t often feel very creative, in the traditional sense. This picture does not help, no women writers?
I took your comment to heart Stacy and changed the image. I like this one much better. What do you think?
Busted, Stacy! I hadn’t even thought about the fact that none of these writers are men. I appreciate your pointing that out.
Getting back on topic..walking the dog? Hell yeah! However,as far as I’m concerned- All my best ideas happen while I’m in the shower.
Jo, there’s science behind why we’re creative in the shower. Jonah Lehrer writes about it, in his new book on creativity, http://on.wsj.com/xEDb0U
