Last month, FPS launched a contest, inviting readers to choose an item they consider their kitchen essential, for a chance to win a copy of Marion Cunningham’s updated version of The Fannie Farmer Cookbook. Thanks so much for your spirited response of entries that were fun to read and useful, too. (Most often mentioned were favorite knives and cast iron pans.) I realize that narrowing your kitchen essential down to one was a near impossible task, and it’s practically as hard for me to pick one winner. But because I have to, here goes.
Congratulations to Matty, whose entry embodied the nurturing, gracious spirit of Marion Cunningham, reflecting her goals of taking care of yourself and your guests.
I would have to say my cocktail shaker. It’s essential to make cocktails for the guests (or partner, etc.) for whom you are cooking and/or to make one for yourself. After the chopping of course.

Congrats to Matty!!! A cocktail shaker is next on my list to get and learn the art of making cocktails.
I just bought The Meatlover’s Meatless Cookbook. I’m trying to get back into my Meatless Mondays and was looking for some new recipes to try. Once I get rolling with it, I’ll let everyone know how the goods turn out.
Thanks, Jalina. Please let us know! It’s always great to get new inspiration in the kitchen.
Nicely done Matty -I’m a resolute believer in the need for cocktails.
Cheers!
Cocktail shaker–definitely an essential! Congratulations, Matty!
Despite the drought here (I’m in the Heartland), I’m finding much inspiration in my local farmer’s market. Although my favorite peach vendor suffered a 95% crop loss, I’ve purchased some and have been channeling my inner farm wife with canning–vanilla-almond-peach jam, ginger-peach jam, peach BBq sauce. Next up–sweet pepper jam with red peppers.
Sounds delicious. This is the most glorious time of year for fruits and vegetables. I get ecstatic just looking at the crop of tomatoes, melons, peaches, etc.
