At Home With a Sick Dog

My dog Rose and I enjoy the mornings. We wake up alert, ready to go. But this morning, my spunky, sturdy Rose was listless. She snubbed her nose at food and water and barely moved from a defensive crouch behind the chair. As I looked into her mournful eyes, I wished she could tell me what was wrong. After an anxious day, I brought her to the Vet. Rose has a gastrointestinal infection, and is now on a regimen of probiotics, antibiotics, and this being California, perhaps some version of downward facing dog.

Does Rose cooperate taking the medicines? Are you putting pills inside cheese?

I put the antibiotic pill in a piece of chicken. The probiotics get sprinkled over her food. So that went okay.

She’s a little better this morning. Still lethargic, but definitely more upbeat than yesterday.

Thanks for asking. It’s nerve wracking.

Sorry this is an anxious time. Good luck to both of you.

Last year a cat of mine got an eye infection, and was prescribed one drop every 12 hours for a week. Cat HATED it. The only method that worked the first two doses was to recline in the bathtub with him, so we were generally confined and I could use my legs and an arm. My other cats came into the bathroom to watch the show. Day 2: I found him waiting for me in the bathtub. His eye was already better and he figured it out. He started cooperating.

My 3-year old dog (who I adopted from a shelter last year) had surgery about a month ago to get a cancerous tumor on his leg removed. It was one of the most traumatic things I’ve ever experienced, though I’m not sure he ever had any idea he was sick. Thankfully, we’ve both recovered now. I hope Rose is back to feeling like her normal self very soon!

Thanks, Natalie. It has been an incredibly stressful couple of days, watching Rose be sick. But finally this morning, she seems to be on the mend. Whew!

It is incredibly stressful to have a sick pet. Good thoughts for both of you.

Thanks so much, Beth. There was a part A to the story, which was that Rose had a growth behind her neck which was aspirated, and I’ve been waiting for lab results. The Vet called today, to say that everything’s fine. Her sudden illness wasn’t related to the growth, but it made these last few days even more anxious. I’m thrilled that she’s okay.
