Emily Dickinson was born on this day in 1830, and she said: “If I read a book [and] it makes my whole body so cold no fire ever can warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.”

    Which is why I make it a point to teach poetry to my fourth graders in April (National Poetry Month), so they can start to recognize poems that do that to them!
