Pet-Related Sleep Deprivation

Insomnia.Brad PhillipsI envy my dog’s ability to sleep 10 hours a night. Except for last night, when Rose began getting restless, eventually jumping down from the bed at 3 AM. It was pouring rain and the last thing I wanted to do was go outside. I tried to cajole her back under the covers with a treat, cutting my hand in the process, which I didn’t notice at first, until I turned on the light and saw the bloody sheet. I went into the bathroom, got a Band-Aid, then layered on another one, because the bleeding was pretty bad. And I had one of those “being single moments of terror” thinking, okay, I’m here alone, it’s the middle of the night, what happens if I need to go to the emergency room? Back to my dog. She refused the treat, so I knew something was up. I searched for my boots and an umbrella (we don’t have much weather here in L.A.), keeping my hand elevated, and staggered downstairs. Sure enough, Rose was sick. She’s fine today. My hand is recovering nicely. I’m exhausted.

Awww…poor little thing. At least she told you she was sick and you didn’t have to clean up dog sickness on top of everything else. She’s a good girl.

You raise an important concern for those living solo–what happens when there’s an emergency. I live in a 16-story apartment building in Manhattan. It’s about a century old building with elevator operators. They can help but what if I need to leave the building to go to a hospital? I also have a cousin nearby but she’s often out of town.

One of my resolutions this year is to make friends in the building and, in fact, a couple down the hall is having me over for dinner next Thu. I’m going to see if they’d be ok being my emergency go-tos. Thanks, Wendy, for reminding me that I need to get that backup plan in place.

Glad to hear you and your dog are OK.

That’s a great plan, Lew. I live in a small building and have many really nice neighbors. I know they’d have my back, though it has never been formalized. A good idea.

Yikes! I’m glad you both are doing better now.

Awww…Wendy. I’m sorry for your rough night. For you and Rosey. If I lived in LA, you could call me and I’d be sure to lend a hand if you were sick or injured. I know the feeling. 🙂

    Be well & good shabbas~

I had one of those moments not long after I had moved into my house. I just about went down in my shower and all I could think about is what if I had hit my head and knocked myself out or worse.

I am a sound sleeper, but the moment I hear Sasha cough up a hairball (she screeches) or Shadow decides to yowl (is he afraid of the dark?), I am up with a start. I’m a worrywort when it comes to my kitties.

    Hi Wendy,
Been there. Done that. And somehow managed to survive – albeit with an extra jolt of caffeine the next day. Glad to hear that you are doing better.
