Today, I emailed my accountant, and told him to expect my paperwork by Monday. I’m feeling pressure at the base of my neck. I better get on it. Where are you in this continuum?
I usually file my tax return at some point during the very last week of tax season. I usually plan to owe a little bit, and have no intention to pay the IRS until I absolutely have to.
Of course, I start working on my return in January, to avoid any surprises. But I never, ever finish it before April 5th.
Timing is everything. There’s a little pressure, but it’s only because I do this for a living. If I screw up on my own taxes, I jeopardize my ability to work on the taxes of others, and thus, jeopardize my own personal income. But this kind of pressure is really minimal. For me, it’s almost a game anyway. It’s only serious when it’s for one of my clients, and their priorities on how they handle their finances are all over the map, and I will accommodate their preferences and their particular financial style. So, as a result, I am ALL OVER that particular continuum.
I had them done last month. With possible furlough days which mean no pay (two a pay period)and roughly $800+ LESS a pay period, I stashed my tax returns into savings. Being single/sole paycheck, I’m not taking any chances. So I was on the stick with my taxes early…
Wendy: Take a mental margarita–you’ll be fine!
I’m an S-Corp so some of my filings are due today, the Ides of March. Thus I’m done.
Thanks, Lew. I got it in the mail to my accountant today.
Fantastic!!
I’m a tax preparer.
