A few months ago, a neighbor brought a plumber to see my apartment to get ideas for updating her bathroom. I ran into her last week and asked if she’d started the remodel. She laughed and quickly said, no. “I decided to go to Italy, instead.” That jived with an article I read recently suggesting that investing in real estate doesn’t necessarily translate into happiness. I say, to each her own.

In general, people cherish experiences more than things. I tend to agree. I live pretty cheap, but blow massive amounts on vacations from time to time. I find myself occasionally dreaming about the places I’ve been, but never the drywall I’ve hung. Doesn’t seem so weird to me.
Is it possible to love Rome AND my washer and dryer?
A slow, skillful, passionate kiss that is full of dizzying promises. A BLT with garden fresh tomato, mayo, and crisp bacon on still warm toasted bread. A 3 hour conversation about life, the universe, and everything with a dearly loved friend. A moment of brilliance when you realize that you have just done a really exceptional, solid piece of work. Sitting alone by lake, a book slipping out of your hands as you fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves and a cool summer breeze caressing your face. Hearing Spem in Alium for the first time. With so many luxuries in the world, how can one choose a favorite?
Good food is high up there for me. (Had to look up Spem in Alium.)
This will sound silly but one of my most recent luxurious experiences was with my college roommate’s 18 year old daughter. As a HS graduation present, she came into NYC from NJ on Sunday. We walked the High Line (in case readers don’t know about this absolutely amazing urban green space, check out http://www.thehighline.org), went to a hole-in-the-wall Italian place in the West Village and then to a tango dance event on a pier on the Hudson River. Just a blast. No rushing. Luxurious.
Here’s to summer in the city.
Gotta say Lew your 18 yr. old friend certainly was luxuriously celebrated. Lovely validation for her and a heavenly day to store in her memory. I can’t think of a better graduation present.
Jules: Thanks for the comment. I think that day was a gift for both of us :).
Well done.
Perfectly said, Jules.
