Democracy is Exhausting

At 9 this morning, I spoke by phone with a customer service rep from the hours-old California health care exchange. Yes, democracy’s infuriating, but I remain a big and hopeful fan.

Of course, with anything new like this there’s going to be an initial onslaught. In my state over 7 million people tried to sign up online the first day, and it crashed the system. I’m going to give it a week or three. Hopefully the rush will have subsided some by then.

Now, if the Republicans will just stop acting like petulant 5-year-olds. (Oh, hell…ALL politicians, for that matter.)

Yeah, I’ve seen some posts from people trying to sign up about what a “failure” the whole thing is because the servers were overwhelmed. Ummm…I’d call that a “success.” SO MANY people want it that the onslaught is overwhelming. I told them just to wait a week and try again…the crowds will thin, the servers will have capacity, and their insurance (and subsidies, in many cases) will start just fine come January 1 whether they sign up today or two weeks from now.

I stubbornly wanted to make contact with them yesterday, so it took a bit of work. And the site’s crashing like crazy in California, but I still think it’s awesome.
