Mindful by Mary Oliver
Everyday
I see or hear
something
that more or less
kills me
with delight,
that leaves me
like a needle
in the haystack
of light.
It was what I was born for —
to look, to listen,
to lose myself
inside this soft world —
to instruct myself
over and over
in joy,
and acclamation.
Nor am I talking
about the exceptional,
the fearful, the dreadful,
the very extravagant —
but of the ordinary,
the common, the very drab,
the daily presentations.
Oh, good scholar,
I say to myself,
how can you help
but grow wise
with such teachings
as these —
the untrimmable light
of the world,
the ocean’s shine,
the prayers that are made
out of grass?

Takes my breath away. Describes a good day in my life. I salute Mary Oliver and the way she makes my heart beat an extra beat.
Every poem is such an inspiration.
Mary Oliver is my favorite poet. Thanks for sharing that wonderful poem.
If you have any other favorites, Paulette, please pass them along.
I really like that. That comes about as near as anything to my own understanding of the Meaning of Life. My best hypothesis at the moment is that God (or the Creative Principle or the Tao or the Ground of Being or whatever name you prefer)is a grand artist, the Artist of all artists. And every artist needs an audience. The work of the artist only reaches its full consummation when it is experienced by another. Perhaps we are God’s audience, and by receiving the wonder of the Creation, we complete it.
That’s beautiful, RS. I’m going to contemplate it.
Thanks for this. Loved it.
Happy New Year Wendy!
So glad, Beth. Thanks!
