I grew up taking the subway, and though I griped about it at the time, it was the best way to get around NYC. Now often stuck in slow-moving traffic, I really miss efficient public transportation. Last Friday night, I went to a book reading about a mile and half from home, and decided to walk, rather than fight the weekend gridlock on Sunset Blvd. Is public transportation available where you live and do you use it?

We have a municipal bus system (too small for a subway system) and a university bus system for getting around campus. I don’t use the municipal one, but I do hop on the university one occasionally (especially during bad weather when roads are icy); I’m only about 1/2 to 3/4 miles from the bus stops. A few of my neighbors–all university types [I live in a bit of a faculty ghetto] use it daily. I wear higher heels than they do, though 😉 When the weather is pleasant and I’m not teaching, I will sometimes walk to campus (for me, about 2.5 miles), but that does mean crossing a very busy road. I do freequently walk to the supermarket (again, weather-dependent, as well as time-dependent, though it’s only a little more than a mile away).
I agree with enjoying the convenience of public transportation, especially subways. And it’s a real lifesaver for those without cars in my area–they take you to the places you need to go and are usually not crowded.
2.5 miles is a healthy-sized jaunt. That’s so good. Petra. I also try to walk as much as I can and I’m grateful to live in a neighborhood with a lot of amenities.
