Today, I bought my first cantaloupe of the season, which is now ripening in a wooden bowl on the kitchen counter. I’m eager for the sugary sweet 100 tomatoes, which should be cropping up in the market any day now. When I used to live in a climate with real winter and without much winter produce, I couldn’t wait for the warm, long days of sunlight and the abundance of fruit. I may get a pang when I hear about friends planning romantic weekends at the beach or the lake. But that’s okay. It’s still my favorite time of the year. What do you love best about summer?

Lightning bugs!!! Love to watch them flicker on and off in the dissipating twilight. And my weekly farmers market trip to chat with my producers–love knowing the people who grow my food. Okay, that actually goes from the beginning of May to end of October, but I associate it most with summer.
I haven’t seen a lightning bug in a long time.
I haven’t seen lightning bugs in a while either, but remember fondly growing up in NC, watching the lightning bugs at dusk while my mom tended the garden. I can smell the garden and fresh tomatoes now…
I’ve been fixating on tomatoes lately. Still waiting for a really good one.
The long, long days and all of the windows open with a gentle breeze blowing thru them. Just like tonight. Oh and not wearing socks at night (my feet get cold).
Unfortunately summer urban life in my neighborhood when the windows are open is hearing the air conditioner next door. Yuck.
I used to live in downtown Chicago so I can appreciate the air conditioner issue. But I still always insisted on outdoor space when renting. Hope you’re enjoying summer. Saw a few lightening bugs when walking dog just now and thought of this post.
This is my first experience living near noisy AC’s. But I love my place and my neighborhood. It’s one of those compromises.
I love that top 40 radio changes to more summer songs. The Motels’ “Suddenly Last Summer”, Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” and Will Smith’s (back when he was with Jazzy Jeff) “Summertime” are in rotation more. Right now I’m listening to Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” and before that Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade.” I know these songs come on any time of the year but they just say SUMMER to me. That, and homemade ice cream!
