Date Wear

Craig Hickman

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine about an upcoming blind date. Somehow we got on the topic of wardrobe, and he chimed in, “don’t dress up. Just wear what you would when we go to the movies.” I followed his advice with jeans and a t-shirt. (Awesome jeans and t-shirt, I must say.) The date evoked no chemistry, but at least I was comfortable.

The topic of what to wear on a first date came up recently when I was going out with a new suitor. We were going to a casual chain restaurant and he mentioned he was going to wear cargo shorts and a t-shirt. I posted about it on Facebook and a slew of comments came in on whether shorts is appropriate for a first date. Date time came and I wore what I intended to wear: sleeveless black dress above the knee, minimal makeup, hoop earrings and sandals. When I reported back to my crew how the date went and what I wore, some where surprised that I “dressed up” even though he didn’t and I knew he wasn’t. I told them I dressed the way I like to look on a first date at a sit-down restaurant. Comfort comes in a lot of shades and covers a wide spectrum.

The most important date wear are clothes in which we can feel good about ourselves. In a sense, the other person is irrelevant.
