Getting in the Groove of Fall

Maori SakaiThis morning, waking up in darkness that is indicative of late October, it was 59 degrees. Here in L.A., that’s brisk. A few weeks ago, my brother, who lives in New England, was telling me about the chores on his list to get ready for winter: raking and bagging the leaves, removing the furniture from the screened-in porch, checking the weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors, while my biggest to-do was finding a long sleeve shirt. This weekend we turn the clocks back. Cloaked in darkness this morning, I was wondering if given a choice, I’d prefer the precious hour of light at the beginning or end of the day. What’s your preference?

Morning, definitely. Although that having been said, I went out yesterday afternoon to rake leaves, and when I came in at dusk, I thought I must have been out much longer than I’d thought, and that it must be very late — it was 5:15! (UK clocks went back last weekend.)

I find this the most challenging time of the year, as we count down to the shortest amount of daylight on December 21.

Another vote for morning! Waking up to light is a great way to start the day–I feel alert and alive. I’m not too crazy about the long days in the summer–I like to have the blinds drawn by 7:30, but it seems weird to do that when I’ve got another 2 hours of daylight left.

Did start my raking over the weekend. I do a bit at a time (especially given a bunch of deadlines within the next few weeks!) Six bags done–only about 20-25 to go! I have three large silver maples in my yard.

And thanks for the “fall back” reminder! Hmmmm, what to do with my extra hour?

Wow…that’s a real toss up. I live in the most western point of the eastern time zone. During winter it’s dark when I drive to work and dark when I drive home. And I sit in a cubicle all day. Awful. I suppose lighter in the morning. I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder terribly…so I suppose light in the morning would be best. 🙂

I lived in Berlin and during the winter it seemed like it started to get dark at 3:30 in the afternoon. Very depressing.

My vote is for light in the morning (since I’m assuming this is a real vote and whatever the consensus is will decide the fate). I’m not crazy about how dark it gets, but at the same time, it reminds me to cuddle up on my couch with my kitty a little more…which is harder to do when its still light out (but not impossible)!

There is a cozyness to the winter light and winter weather. And I do like wearing sweaters and boots. But I’m definitely a summer girl.

As recently as last year I would have said evening but these days I’d rather have the extra light in the morning. I’m finding that I enjoy getting up early for a run and then some household chores before going to work. Right now, the sun doesn’t rise until 7:30 am, which is unhelpful!!
