Are you having a snow day? (The big news here in L.A. is that it’s drizzling.) One of the handy items I read regarding the East Coast blizzard is a collection of recipes to make from random ingredients in your pantry. And it made me wonder how long I could last with the food that is currently in my kitchen.

Having dealt with an ice storm about 10 years ago (and losing power for 6 days), I do make sure I have *something* to sustain me for a few days. Looks like I’d be subsisting on nut butters (peanut and almond), cherries (dried and canned), DARK chocolate (I eat a piece every day as a breakfast dessert!), and nuts and pickles and jams. And fixings for a jasmine.
Having dealt with snowstorms that kept me home for a couple of days (WITH) power, I’d be doing a lot of cooking and baking!
I hadn’t even considered what would happen if the stuff in my fridge/freezer went bad, due to losing power. I’d really be screwed. For example, how would I chill my martini?
In an ice storm or snowstorm, you do have the option of chilling your glasses or freezing your ice outdoors!
I’ve lived without winter for so long, I didn’t even consider that. But of course you’re right. Outdoors is one giant freezer.
All sounds good Petra. What’s a jasmine? Sounds like a yummy cocktail.
Hey, Jules–a Jasmine is a most delicious cocktail! It tastes like grapefruit juice (really!) and is a combination of gin, Cointreau, Campari, and fresh lemon juice. Packs a wallop and has a gorgeous dusty pink color.
What are the proportions, Petra.
This sounds divine!!!!. I love Campari. So am very interested in the proportion. Can’t wait to try it.
The Jasmine:
1.5 oz. gin
1 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. Campari
1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
Shake with ice for about 15 seconds or so. Strain into a cocktail glass. If desired, garnish with a lemon twist.

It will be hard to break the martini habit, but this sounds delicious!
An excellent party drink!
dessert for breakfast….I like the way that you think, Petra!
One of the pleasures of being single is that we can eat dessert for breakfast without fear of setting a bad example.
Thanks for the recipe Petra. In my home this will always be the Jasmine from Petra. Can’t wait to try it,
