I watched this year’s tepid Oscars at a friends house, where we sat by the fire on a rainy night, eating bowls of Texas chili. Midway through, suddenly everything went dark. (The storm had sparked a power outage in the neighborhood.) Back at home, I was grateful for electricity and caught up with the second half. What was one of your favorite moments?
Loved Patricia but his was my show stopping moment: “There are more black men under correctional control today than there were under slavery in 1850.” – John Legend
And unlike Arquette, both Legend and Common were speaking without notes. Amazing!
Those are two cool guys! But I appreciate that it wasn’t as natural for Patricia and she went for it anyway. Also, a very crucial issue that’s often forgotten these days. And she handled the backlash very well.
Patricia Arquette is so fierce, and I appreciate her activism. Even if she didn’t do it perfectly.
There were some pretty awesome acceptance speeches that night.
I was dreading Lady Gaga – I thought she might decide to add her own little bits of flair to the “Sound of Music” tribute and ruin it, but I thought she did very well (well, with the exception of that last note of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, but that’s just being overly picky I think.) And afterward, it just melted my heart to see Julie Andrews. I’d call her a national treasure, except for the small fact that she’s British. (Yes, I am a bit of a “Sound of Music” junkie. And I’m not going to make any apologies about that! 😉 )
The “In Memoriam” section underwhelmed me, though. The drawings were nice, but I prefer the film clips. The clips are more effective at making me reach for the Kleenex box.
I was also in tears when Julie Andrews came on stage, and got such a warm reception. I agree that the In Memoriam section was a dud. And it’s hard to screw that up.
