My dog Rose is 10. Through the years, her nicknames have morphed. For no coherent reason, I also call her mama pajama, potato-head girl and smelly belly. What are your adorable pet names?
He usually acts like such a gentleman that a “Mr.” before his name just felt appropriate. But sometimes when he’s being silly, its Buh Buh (pronounce Bubba, but for some reason I refuse to spell it like)
The older they get the more nicknames. My 15-year old lab, Lola, more frequently gets called Lo-lo, Lobo, Popo, Posey, Lola Schmola, Lolita, Lolacita, Rosy, Rosy Rosinator, Rosina, Rosetta, etc. Of course she is more or less deaf so all my creativity is lost on her.
Gunner, who is 9, goes by G or GG or Geeg, or Cheech or Cheechonchkin (among others)
Magnus who is 7 mos. is just Mags or Maggers … so far.
It impresses me that our pets often, and quickly, figure out that they need to respond to these ‘nicknames’, in addition to their regular names. If I didn’t understand a language and someone started using a different word to address me, I might be puzzled…
I guess that often our vocal tone, inflection, intonation, body language, etc are similar enough that they understand they are being addressed. Such smart creatures.
I used to call my lovely GSD Sir Barks-a-lot, Head of Security, Goofball, Hairball, Einstein (too smart for his own good).
My cat I’ve had 10 years is officially Marilyn. But sometime a few years ago when living with a friend she gained the nick names “kitty”, “meow meow”, “kitty meow meow”. She’s temporarily living with that same friend now (they’re best buddies), since I’ve moved for work and am between houses. I miss my girl!
Obviously I come here sporatically, this is a rather dealyed reply! Miss Marilyn’s name just came to me. Later my mom observed that our yoga teacher at that time name was Marilyn so I think I subconsciously connected both their stretching, graceful movements and the name Marilyn popped into my head!
My little MinPin rescue as last Xmas I’ve named Dude. One day soon after I’d gotten him I called him that & his head snapped around like he knew that word…so I named him that officially. Later I learned his original name had been Duke.
His nick names range from Doodly Do to BB to Bae for affectionate reasons only.
I love this post! I call my beloved pet rabbit a lot of nicknames! Here are some of the most recent:
-FunBun
-Bunnifer
-Baby Moon
-Binks
-Minx
-Buggaloo
-Baboo
-Fluffernutter
That’s an eclectic mix.
I always have nicknames for pets. I don’t have a current pet, but I have nicknames for my mom’s cat. Mainly I call her Boo Boo. Not sure why.
Isn’t it interesting that pet nicknames don’t necessarily connect to anything. It’s pure heart.
I usually go by his formal name – Mr. Simon. But at times I just go with Buh Buh. He answers to both. 🙂
Any back story to these names, Lola?

This is becoming one of my favorite posts ever.
Miss Bella DaintyPaws
Miss Bella Pees-a-lot
Belly Bella
Princess
Ploppyhead
These are names for my cat Bella. I didn’t really care for the name Bella, but she seemed to be used to it (I’m not her first owner).
These are making me smile!

Alliteration seems to be a theme.

You must be right about the inflection.
Ha, I just have to write in that both my real name and pseudonym that I use for this site has appeared as someone’s name for their pet. I love it 🙂
Wonder what that means….

Is your cat named Marilyn after anyone in particular?

Your puppies names are cute, I think I like smelly belly best 🙂
And by the way, her belly smells great!

Great story, Rebecca.
