Dancing into Labor Day

Martin Whatson

Three-day weekends can make me uneasy, especially when I haven’t done enough social planning. It helps to have at least one anchor to count on. In my case, it’s Westside ballet studio, which is open every holiday except for Christmas. On most long weekends, I take a Monday morning ballet class. Just knowing it’s there, gives my holiday a boost. What’s your anchor?

  1. I am watching season 2 of Nashville. And I get to sleep late for three days in a row. That is enough for me!

Boxed sets! If I have one I have a dozen … then there are the stacks of books I have yet to read … I am happy with long week-ends … I am never bored. Then if I want an exchange with others I sit on Dalnet IRC & speak with people … I have been type /talking there for 19 years.

IRC … internet relay chat has been around for decades … Dalnet is one of the networks … I like it as you can register your nick name. https://www.dal.net/

there are endless channels … for different countries, different ailments, etc. I usually sit in a suicide prevention channel that has been there for 20 years. I have met people there that I have spoke with on the ‘phone, exchange snail mail with … they are real.

Such a great topic! I feel that same tenseness around three day weekends. I often don’t even remember that they are coming until they do, and it seems everybody has plans. My anchor for long weekends is horse riding, however I strained a tendon in my toe and have to stay off of it. Now I don’t know what to do on Monday. Enjoy your ballet class!

I’m not much of a socializer but it can feel awkward to be home alone for three days without plans. My anchor is knitting; I started a new project over the weekend and so have been absorbed in that. I haven’t had much time lately to just sit for several hours and work on anything, so it was a treat. Plus it was too hot here to do much of anything outdoors…. so I felt doubly ok hibernating.

I totally relate to this feeling about 3 day weekends and it’s comforting to know that others experience this too Sometimes I’m just too busy or lazy to aggressively plan, then I’m bored and lonely and sorry for myself during the long weekend. My anchors are yoga class, walks at the beach with my old lady dog, and roller skating to the ocean.
