Time Out for a Sunset

Grant Haffner

Earlier this week, I was racing to get to a friend’s house for dinner. I was running late because of construction on a busy thoroughfare, which narrowed two lanes into one, snarling L.A. traffic even more than usual. My shoulders grew knots. As I finally turned the corner, a few minutes from my destination, I caught a glimpse of the sunset in the rearview mirror. There were streaks of crimson and fuchsia interspersed with palm trees. In awe, I pulled over to soak in the view.

How wonderful that you stopped to admire nature’s artwork! Too often, we fail to see or appreciate the “small” joys, delights, and wonders of the world because we’re too busy or in a hurry or both. I am certainly guilty of this.

The view behind my house in winter, especially at dusk or sunset (it’s west-facing) never fails to leave me in awe. It’s basically a few bare trees in the distance set against a fading sky. With the lowered humidities, the outlines of the tree limbs are so much clearer. Thank you for reminding me that I have this to look forward to in a couple of months.
