Beyoncé Rules

This year, I had tepid interest in the Super Bowl and mostly as a cultural event. But Beyoncé was worth the price of admission. I’ve watched her Formation video so many times since yesterday (along with tens of millions of others). It’s stunning. It inspires me to action. It takes my breath away.

The video is amazing. I greatly appreciate that she and Jay Z give money to grassroots movements including Black Lives Matter without a ton of self congratulatory promotion.

      I didn’t know that. It’s great.

From what I’ve been told they fund specific things such as bailing out Black Lives Matter activists, water for flint, travel expenses for people such as Deray McKesson. No word on if they support Deray’s bid for mayor of Baltimore.

WOO! That does take your breath away. So many layers. So much to think about.

It’s very catchy, it makes me want to dance, it’s so artistic and daring. The best part about it has been seeing how much my black friends see it as a profoundly positive message for their self-image, which really isn’t something that happens everyday. Very rarely, in fact. Unfortunately, some of my white friends saw her half-time show using Black Panther Party imagery as hateful and they compared her to the KKK. I told them that I found that viewpoint completely appalling and I ended up having a long argument about it and it wasn’t pretty. But what are you gonna do?
