Is My Dog Playing Me?

Jean Jullien

Occasionally during the last few weeks, my dog Rose has gotten up around 2 or 3 in the morning, and barked to go out. In the past, this has been a sign of her urgently needing to do her business. So I take it seriously. But lately, all she wants to do outside is eat grass. After some serious grazing, I have to tug hard to get her back in the house. But here’s the thing. Rose is not sick. She goes back to sleep (while I toss and turn). At her usual morning hour, she chomps down on breakfast with plenty of energy. It’s driving me crazy. What’s up with this?

    Hi Wendy,

Is she vomiting the grass right after she eats it? If not then it maybe that she is doing it to add fiber . My dog throws up immediately on eating grass( when his tummy is in discomfort) but otherwise it just stays in and comes out next day in poop and his normal food routine doesn’t get affected. The early morning waking is puzzling though.

She is not vomiting. Her stool is good. She mostly seems to crave grass at 3 AM. Last night, I got a reprieve.

Mine love eating the spring grasses. I think it’s a nutritional need they somehow have at this time of year, and it never seems to make them sick (my dogs I mean). Why Rose feels the need to do it in the middle of the night I don’t understand. My older boy often needs to pee in the middle of the night so I get the frustration of them returning to a nice slumber while you lie there awake!

Is it possible to pick a few handfuls before you go in for the night, so she can eat it inside? That way you wouldn’t have to get up 🙂 Sounds like the doggie equivalent of raiding the fridge for a mid-night snack.

Such funny creatures. If we could only know what they are thinking.

I like your analogy of raiding the fridge for a midnight snack. That’s what it seems like. I bought some edible grass at the market and offered it to her last night. She had a few nibbles, but still couldn’t settle. I hear her stomach grumbling. So weird.
