Signs of Fall

L.A. weather is hovering in the mid eighties as pumpkins make their appearance in stores. What’s your favorite thing about autumn?

Just one thing? Oh, dear, that’s tough. Perhaps my favorite thing (at the moment) is the smell of autumn leaves in the woods. Or maybe the sound of them crunching underfoot.

Of course, there is the re-emergence of soups and stews, apple cider from local orchards, leaf raking (to a point–it’s great exercise and I much prefer it to snow shoveling), the coziness of being in my nest (i.e. my house), the return of the Manhattan (my colder weather cocktail), the low humidity of the air which makes everything look crisper, the view from my bedroom looking west when the leaves have fallen from the trees across the corn field. Autumn is my favorite season (and October my favorite month).

WRT mid-80 degree weather, we actually had that last week here in the Midwest. Cold front passed through Friday night and now everything is more seasonal.

    I LOVE this photograph!

The crisp air, the smell of woodsmoke and fallen leaves, apples and cider donuts! This time of year I always miss being in New England.
