I have several home projects that are starting to pile up. There’s a sometimes leaky hose in my dishwasher, a light switch that occasionally crackles when I turn it on, and a rug that could use a steam clean, thanks in part, to my otherwise perfect dog Rose. It’s surprising what I’ve been able to accommodate. I’m thinking that a New Year’s resolution might provide an ideal nudge. What’s in your home environment that could use a refresh?

First thing: replace that light switch pronto! It’s a fire waiting to happen!
After that, the dishwasher hose. And check for water damage in the walls, floor joists, loose floor tiles, etc. (just to add to the fun).
I’ve put a tape over the light switch as a reminder to not use it until it’s fixed. (It’s an auxiliary light in my bathroom.) Calling the electrician tomorrow.
I recently refreshed my bathroom with a new shower curtain, towels, floor mat and trash can. It’s much more pleasant in there now.
Although it’s not exactly a refresh, I have a pile of ??? things in a bag in my kitchen that are waiting for the day when I have a ton of extra time and energy and can post them on ebay and get them out of my apartment.
What’s the approximate value of the items in your bag in the kitchen?
LOL, not very much I’d imagine. Although one of the pricier things (maybe $40??) is a pair of ice trekkers that you can attach to your shoes and so walk safely on icy sidewalks. My mom gave them to me YEARS ago and they have never been used–until this week when we had an unexpected snowfall. So I guess that I won’t be selling them after all 😉
I’m trying to visualize ice trekkers (living in L.A., that is). I’ll have to check them out online.
As I was thinking about your post, the only thing that came to mind was the paper work, documents, etc that seem to pile up and always put off when at home. I am getting on top of that in the last part of this year and hope to continue next year. That is my version on cleaning and order, for now.
Do you have a place to put the paperwork once you’ve sorted through it?
Wendy, will you try to do these things yourself?
I changed out a dryer outlet and a porch light myself and I am not all that handy. Something about calling, waiting, and paying someone that makes me try to do it first.
As far as my house goes it seems to never end, it’s always something.
I’m so not a DYI person when it comes to home repair. As far as the lightswitch, I asked my handymen to fix it, and he couldn’t. So, I’m thinking it’s time for an electrician. The steam cleaning is the one thing I could certainly do myself.
Over 18 months later, I am STILL reveling in my remodeled kitchen! That said, there are some other smaller things that need to be taken care of in my house: repaint living room and hall (that’ll be a summer project), cut back canes on the blackberry bush (during a winter warm spell–it’s 2°F as I type this), powerwash deck (summer again), and replace flooring and vanity in powder room (contractor, not me!)
For me: clean refrigerator coils, REALLY SCRUB the bathroom floor, and clean/paint louvered doors in office. And continue to revel in kitchen 🙂
Not much of a bathroom floor scrubber, my favorite is “continue to revel in kitchen” part.
