I’m not an impetuous consumer. As an avid cook, I love kitchen gadgets, but I restrain myself because of limited space and try to only buy items that I really need. Lately, I’ve been hankering for a pressure cooker since I read from a trusted source that they provide the best results for soups and stews. I also think about getting a powerful lightweight vacuum as an incentive to vacuum more, though really, is that so important? The one household appliance that sits unused in the drawer is my blow dryer. What item is taking up space in your home?

Good question, Wendy. I’m pretty good at getting rid of things (ESPECIALLY clothing!) and, while I have a lot of kitchen tools, gadgets, and appliances, they (to channel Marie Kondo) bring me joy. I do have too many hair supplies and shall go through the closet and discard those I don’t use. Seriously, how many different kinds of volumizers or “hold” products does one really need?
BTW, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up was my inspiration to “Kondo” my house. Again, compared to most I’m pretty good about getting rid of stuff, but even so I was surprised at how much I still had to discard!
I do have too many mustards, thanks to a trip to the National Mustard Museum.
If you’re looking at pressure cookers, consider getting an Instapot (7 different appliances in one, including a pressure cooker). I don’t have one myself, but my friends who do rave about them. I’m almost hoping my slow cooker will die so that I have an excuse to buy one!
As for appliances that sit unused, my blender and my Magic Bullet are probably the two biggest. I bought a Kitchenaid hand blender recently, and I don’t think I’ve used the other appliances since.
Why do I feel like I’m writing an ad?
I know this wasn’t really your question, but if I may…I am a big advocate of the lightweight vacuum. I splurged on the Dyson cordless, and I vacuum WAY more than I did without it. And it only really stays charged oh the very high setting for about 8 minutes. So in 8 minutes, you’re done vacuuming! I love it.
As far as unused appliances…the Cuisinart food processor I bought last year wins. When I bought it, I was really into this eating plan that focused on a ton of veggies. So I did use it for a while for chopping up cabbage. But eventually, I started hating the clean up, so back in my closet it went and there it remains. My crockpot goes through phases, but I guess that is too be expected when who wants a huge pot of anything hot in the summer months. Time to give it some use though.
I’ve been drawn to the Dyson cordless. I’m glad to hear that you like it. I have a Dyson upright, and it’s heavy. I never want to take it out. On the other hand, I LOVE my Cusinart food processor. I use it many times a week.
Lately I haven’t been using my vacuum as much because it’s a canister vac, which I love but since I moved into a very small apartment I have to take it apart to put it away so using it is a pain. I’ve been thinking about the small dyson myself.
I use my dustbuster rather than breaking out the big vacuum. Not a very efficient way to clean up.
